How To Become A Professional Dancer

By Elena McDowell

Knowing how to become a professional dancer begins with the realization that this will be the source of your livelihood. It means understanding what is required, how to achieve it and what to expect from the industry. There are different dancing genres from which one can choose. The choice is guided by taste and the audience you would like to serve.

The genres that are marketable include tap, jazz, salsa, hip hop and ballet, among others. To become the best in these dances, one is required to enroll into a dancing school for guidance by tutors. Some of the moves are complex and require careful guidance. The tutors are there to pinpoint mistakes and applaud when you do the right thing. You will stick within the rules of each genre. Consistent practice will bear more fruits. These sessions are either individual or group.

Dancing is best done in a group. Interested persons are required to join such groups because of their clear focus. They have a schedule that instills discipline. Discouragements will emanate from persons who do not believe that dancing is a serious career. Maintain focus on your goal, exercise and be patient.

A dancing career includes performances during video productions, tours or for shows on contract or as freelancers. Other troops perform at particular entertainment spots or in cruise ships on regular and scheduled basis. The two performance fields are distinct and unique. They require different skills considering that artists have a predictable trend while entertainment spots demand variety. This is a choice that dancers must make.

There are regular auditions by dance troops who only recruit the best. This means that aspiring dancers must be at the top of the game at all times. One rejection does not mean that you have lost the dream of getting professional. It only means that you try harder or a different genre from what you are doing. Follow the instructions and corrections made by the judges and you are destined for greatness.

The industry can be hard and harsh to penetrate and therefore requires a great deal of resilience. As a dancer, self esteem is important because it gives you the confidence to face the audience. The passion is displayed in the eyes and moves. The audience can tell how well you love what you are doing and will pick a cue from you. This means that they only enjoy what you enjoy.

The flexibility required for professional dances is immense. Body fitness, creativity and alertness enable the dancers to adapt to the situation. There are performances that will not allow you to spend all the time practicing and choreographing. This means that you have to produce your best game.

There is money for those who understand how to become a professional dancer. Performances are assured in different parts of the world and in front of diverse audience. Your hard work and determination will bring you money. The dance industry keeps changing and professionals must keep updating their skills.
